12 Weeks!! First Trimester is Behind Us!!

Three months down, six to go! Less than 200 days left before we get to meet our little baby!! Hard to believe the first trimester is nearly behind me. The last few weeks have continued to be weeks of fatigue and moments of nausea. But no complaints here, because I still have not physically been vomiting, so I am a happy mom-to-be. I am hoping that beginning the second trimester I will get some energy and the nausea will subside. Between the large quantities of water and fluids I have been consuming as well as the uterus and baby growing, my pants are starting to get a little snug and uncomfortable. Thank goodness for my neighbor Katie, she has given me some great maternity clothes that I have already put to some use, really just the jeans. I also bought a BellaBand, which is a stretchy wide cotton band that you wear over your unbuttoned pants or jeans. The one I bought has some lace along the bottom, so it just looks like a camisole under my shirts.

We had our 12 week appointment today and everything went great. The doctor felt for my uterus and she could feel it and said all looked/felt well. We also got to hear little Baby Will’s heart beating, which was so exciting!! The baby’s heart was beating strong at 153 beats a minute! This entire experience has been just amazing and so hard to believe still at times. We will have another checkup in 4 weeks (May 28), this appointment we will schedule our sonogram appointment for June, I can’t wait for June.

One other thing we have to start thinking about already in daycare…YIKES! Manhattan is a crazy town, that is for sure. Many of the places here in town have waiting lists to get into their programs. I am not looking forward to this but will be happy to figure something out.

Here is what is going on with the baby’s development this week:

The most dramatic development this week: reflexes. Baby's fingers will soon begin to open and close, its toes will curl, its eye muscles will clench, and its mouth will make sucking movements. In fact, if you prod mom’s abdomen, baby will squirm in response, although mom won't be able to feel it. Baby’s intestines, which have grown so fast that they protrude into the umbilical cord, will start to move into its abdominal cavity about now, and baby’s kidneys will begin excreting urine into its bladder.

Meanwhile, nerve cells are multiplying rapidly, and baby's brain, synapses are forming furiously. Baby’s face looks unquestionably human: Its eyes have moved from the sides to the front of its head, and its ears are right where they should be. From crown to rump, little baby-to-be is just over 2 inches long (about the size of a lime) and weighs half an ounce.

Stay tuned for more updates soon!! Thank you for keeping up with us. We are blessed to have such amazing family and friends to give us love and support.

10 Weeks Along and Going Strong!!

Today I am 10 weeks pregnant. WOW! Hard to believe I am a 1/4 of the way through this pregnancy. The last couple of weeks have been pretty much the same. The nausea has kicked in full force. Still not actually throwing up, so I am extremely thankful for that. I have been pretty tired and my belly is feeling more bloated now. Today I actually worn my first pair of maternity jeans...is that bad? Who cares...they are so much more comfortable. We had our meeting at the clinic with the staff nurse to talk about medical history and get a starting point for vitals, blood work, and some other stuff. What was most exciting was we got to see our little baby on our very first sonogram!! Oh my goodness were we just thrilled to see our little baby in there moving and shaking already. It really was an amazing sight to see the baby wiggling around, it even kicked its little foot at us. We heard the heart beating which was also a touching sight and sound. I really thought I would cry the first time I experienced the sight of our baby, but I was just so excited and I could not stop smiling. The sonogram tech told us that everything looked great. She said that the size and shape of the uterus was just as it should be and the baby was in a good position high up in the uterus. It was a good feeling to hear the positive words and this experience has really made us feel like this is really happening. We are getting more excited every week. Just 3 more weeks of school for me and yes...I am counting the days/weeks. This week I present my formal reading lesson and I am excited and really nervous all at the same time. Next week is my PE/Health lesson and I am nervous about that too. The end is in sight for this semester of school. Can't wait!! We celebrated Jeremy's 30th birthday at the KC Royals game with good friends and family and we could not have asked for a more perfect day. God continues to bless us and we continue to thank him everyday for his bountiful blessings in our lives. This journey is really just beginning and we are just holding on and enjoying every minute of it. The baby is really changing, growing, and developing. Here is what's going on!

The baby is barely the size of a kumquat — a little over an inch or so long, crown to bottom — and weighs less than a quarter of an ounce, the baby has now completed the most critical portion of its development. This is the beginning of the so-called fetal period, a time when the tissues and organs in baby's body rapidly grow and mature.

The baby is swallowing fluid and kicking up a storm. Vital organs — including its kidneys, intestines, brain, and liver (now making red blood cells in place of the disappearing yolk sac) — are in place and starting to function, though they'll continue to develop throughout the pregnancy.

If you could take a peek inside the womb, you'd spot minute details, like tiny nails forming on fingers and toes (no more webbing) and peach-fuzz hair beginning to grow on tender skin.

In other developments: Baby's limbs can bend now. The baby's hands are flexed at the wrist and meet over its heart, and the feet may be long enough to meet in front of the body. The outline of baby's spine is clearly visible through translucent skin, and spinal nerves are beginning to stretch out from its spinal cord. Baby's forehead temporarily bulges with its developing brain and sits very high on its head, which measures half the length of its body. From crown to rump, baby is about 1 1/4 inches long. In the coming weeks, baby will again double in size — to nearly 3 inches.

Look for an update in a couple of weeks!!
